As an artist, I believe I can fully express myself through the artwork I create.
To put it simply, as a survivor of domestic abuse, art is therapeutic for me, its healing.
When you go through something like mental and emotional abuse, such as coercive control, you DO NOT have the physical scars to show to the world, you DO NOT possess the ‘tangible proof’ of what you have been through.
It was for this reason that I did not receive the necessary support that I needed and deserved during a difficult period of my life when I was trying to break free and move on from an unhealthy relationship. Not even from many friends and family. My words were being misinterpreted.
But I’ll be forever thankful to the visual and performance artist Rachel Gadsden for the “See Her” project that gave me a chance to tell my story on Canvas through the colors of my choice. Painting and drawing gave me a voice and the freedom to speak my truth, my way, on my terms.
While learning to love all of me once again, I got the opportunity to be the opening speaker for Dr Cassandra Weiner (who, with the support of the late Professor Evan Stark who coined the term coercive control, made coercive control a criminal offense in the UK in 2015) at her book launch “Coercive Control and the Criminal Law” in the renowned City Law School in London.
Watching academics, including the Dean, journalist, students and attendees marvel at my work, and observing how it became the catalyst for dialogue about domestic abuse, coercive control and the therapeutic benefits of art, turned that event of book launch into one of the most profound moments of my journey as an artist.
Since then this and other experiences have highlighted that art can be a direction to meet life challenges, while simultaneously helping you to reclaim freedom, joy and discovery for self. It can inspire and empower others to do the same, or as I like to say “let art be your becoming.”
Now I am a public speaker who uses my art to raise awareness of domestic abuse and the healing that comes from talking about it.
Experiencing abuse that many still do not acknowledge as abuse, made me aware of my need for freedom to enjoy life on my terms. Reclaiming my power, being grounded in my capabilities and affirming my self-love after enduring years of abuse made me proud of how resilient I am.
Each one of my art pieces tell a story of my vulnerability, pain, truth, survival, growth and how my creative expression manifested into healing, empowerment, resilience, freedom, joy and ultimately a becoming.
Through the artwork included in Freedom Fusion Collection, I aim to help people impacted by domestic abuse and other trauma feel loved, courageous and empowered to reclaim their freedom and joy.
